Pinao – Green Darner Mating Wheel (Anax junius)

A pair of Common Green Darners (Anax junius) locked in a mating wheel above the wetlands of Keālia Pond, Maui. Known in Hawaiian as pinao, dragonflies are agile aerial predators that play a vital role in wetland ecosystems. While not native to Hawaiʻi, the Green Darner has become a widespread and familiar sight around ponds and open waters across the islands.
