Aeʻo at Dusk – Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni)

The Hawaiian subspecies of the Black-necked Stilt, known locally as aeʻo, wades through a reflective shoreline at dusk. With its slender build and bright pink legs, Himantopus mexicanus knudseni is a striking wetland bird and a federally listed endangered species in Hawaiʻi. Once widespread across the islands, aeʻo now depend on protected wetlands like Keālia Pond and other restored habitats for survival.
